Covering letter (cover letter)



A covering letter (application letter, cover letter) is a document send to the employer by a candidate applying for a job. Often the employer requires it with the CV, but this is not the rule. Some people are only interested in your CV, and they read it only. But it is always better to write the covering letter. The exception is a situation where you are asked not to send the letter.

The covering letter is a positive self-presentation of the candidate in the context of a specific job advertisements. It contains arguments for the fact that you are the right choice for this position. The candidate should explain why he/she wants to get the job, why it is worth meeting him/her and that he/she is ready to work.

Requirements for a good cover letter

  • A cover letter should be written on paper of a good quality;

  • It cannot contain any spelling errors;

  • It should have an aesthetic appearance;

  • It has a typewritten form, only signature is handwritten;

  • It should be written in a clear and readable way;

  • It should interest the employer and increase the positive impression after reading the CV or encourage him/her to read it;

  • It should be written in a polite and positive way;

  • The cover letter should be written in a good style, because it says a lot about the intellectual condition of the candidate;

  • Its aim is to “sell” a candidate;

  • It is the best to address the cover letter to the person directly responsible for the recruitment process;

  • Letters can vary in length and style depending on a particular situation.

Length

Cover letter should be no longer than one A4 page. However, address data take some place, so part of the letter can be placed on the other page. The content of the letter itself should be no longer than one A4 page.

Components of the cover letter

  1. Introduction

    At the beginning formulate the purpose for which you turn to the employer, for example. “In response to the announcement No ……”. This part of the cover letter should include following information ; why you want to work in this organization and what position you are applying for. Be careful to match the expectations of what the employer offers at a given position.

  2. The main part

    Then you have to convince the employer that you are the right person for this work. Here you can describe your work preparation, showing your education and your skills. A person who does not have any professional experience may include information about the grades he/she received at the university from programs that may be useful in the workplace. Remember to mention about internships and practices relevant to the job you are applying for.

    If you do not have the required skills and you do want to get the job, please write about your desire to complete the necessary knowledge, get new experience. Emphasize your motivation to work in this company.

  3. Conclusion

    The letter should end in a polite and positive way, for example:

    “I think I have the required experience and qualifications. I hope that I will have the opportunity to discuss this position, in detail, during the interview.”

    In this part, contact information for the employer can be included there. Use the salutation (“Sincerely”), and sign it.

    Optionally, below the signature, you can put the list of attachments (e.g. references, certificates, diplomas).
