Funeral Home – Business Idea

Dom pogrzebowy - pomysł na biznes

Opening a funeral home can be a profitable business idea, but before making a decision, it is worth considering both the advantages and disadvantages of running such a business. Despite the crisis, the funeral industry still enjoys demand, but many companies operate illegally, leading to the so-called grey zone. Work is underway to amend funeral law, which aims to regulate the rules of operation for companies organizing funerals.

What is a funeral home?

A funeral home is a company that deals with the organization and conduct of a funeral according to the family’s wishes and legal regulations. A funeral home offers a wide range of services related to the funeral, including transporting the body, preparing the body for burial, organizing the funeral ceremony, selecting a coffin or urn, and many others. In addition, funeral homes often offer services related to grave care and organize anniversary ceremonies and other memorial events. In Poland, there are both private and state funeral homes, and their activities are strictly regulated by law, including the Cemetery and Burial Act.

The funeral industry – changing rules

Work is underway in Poland to amend funeral law, which aims to introduce changes to reduce the grey area in the funeral industry. It is planned to introduce a minimum number of employees in the funeral home and an obligation to have a refrigeration room and hearse. Companies that do not meet the standards will have to disappear from the market. Under the new regulations, it is also planned to replace the paper death certificate with an electronic one and create an online database of cemeteries and graves. The current economic crisis has also affected the funeral industry, causing an increase in service prices, although the amount of the funeral benefit has not changed since 2011.

Polish Funeral Industry Chamber estimates that there are about 4,000 funeral companies operating in Poland, of which only one-fourth operate legally and employ personnel, while the rest are so-called “garage companies” without permanent employment or infrastructure. Due to increased demand for burial services, the time it takes to organize a funeral has doubled, and in some regions of the country, it can exceed two weeks. According to estimates, the total cost of a traditional funeral with a coffin may increase by about 20% compared to the previous year.
