How did Homo sapiens migrate, is it possible to survive on Mars, why do birds sing? In Scientific Radio, thanks to weekly podcasts, since 2020, you can listen to experts talking about various fields. They are interviewed by a journalist with extensive experience – Karolina Głowacka.
Scientific Radio is one of the finalists in this year’s Science Popularization competition in the Media category.
Established in 2020, Scientific Radio is a podcast created by Karolina Głowacka, a journalist with almost 15 years of experience. Its core consists of weekly, approximately hour-long interviews with representatives of Polish science, both in the humanities and the exact sciences.
A large part of the interviews is recorded during visits to academic centers in various parts of Poland. This allows for presenting the research conducted there to a wider audience. As the creators of the Radio emphasize, they value not only the results of scientific research but also the journey that led to them.
“In Scientific Radio, you can hear what inspires scientists, what challenges they face, why they decided to dedicate thousands of hours of work to unraveling the chosen mystery. Many of them talk about the behind-the-scenes of their work and their own scientific dreams,” assure the creators of Scientific Radio.
“Equipped with a suitcase and a backpack full of equipment, I travel from city to city, from university to university, and (okay, arranged in advance), I knock on the doors of scientists’ offices. This is also an additional value. Being able to talk to researchers where they feel most comfortable,” writes Karolina Głowacka on the Radio’s website.
During the summer months, Scientific Radio publishes an additional series of episodes in which scientists answer questions sent by children. This initiative is called LAMU – Summer Academy of Young Minds. A young person can record their question, even on a regular smartphone, provide their name, age, and send it to the specified email address. The answers given by experts to selected questions are later published in special episodes.
The “Scientific Radio” podcast is available on all major streaming services (Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts) and on the YouTube platform. In total, all content on all channels is played an average of 750,000 to 1,000,000 times per month. In less than 3 years, “Scientific Radio” has gained 15.5 million views (as of September 2023).
The activities of the Radio can also be followed on social media here, here, and here.
During its operation, the initiative has won several podcast awards, including Podcaster of the Year 2021 and Podcast of the Year 2022 in the Science, Education, Technology category. Certainly, one of the successes was also reaching over 100,000 subscriptions on the YouTube platform in 2023.
Karolina Głowacka received an award in the Science Popularizer competition in 2016 for the series of broadcasts “Radio Academy of Sciences” (Radio TOK FM). However, the “Scientific Radio” podcast is a completely new, independent project, reaching a new audience.
